Port Authority Reports 23 Employees Test Positive for COVID-19, Ridership Plummets

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates five regional airports, the PATH train and three bus terminals says 23 of its 7,000 employees have tested positive for the coronavirus.

The Port Authority board met by teleconference Thursday. Chairman Kevin O’Toole said the agency -- which was attacked on 9/11 -- will get through this too.

“This agency has gone on and seen battles, and been tested over the past 99 years and this is one of them,” O'Toole said.

O'Toole said there's been massive declines in riders at all its facilities, but it will keep operations running to serve for essential workers across the region.

Construction will continue at LaGuardia airport, but if the number of flights don’t pick up soon, they may consolidate terminals temporarily.
