Plumb is the name of a new trio – that’s plumb with a b, like a straight line, not plum as in the fruit. This Plumb features the legendary sax player David Murray with two members of the essential hip hop band The Roots, drummer/producer/film maker Questlove, and the pianist/arranger Ray Angry. With a name like Plumb, they might be suggesting a straight line between the worlds of jazz and hip hop, but music rarely moves in a straight line and so the band’s sound wanders freely across the musical spectrum. They play tonight and tomorrow night at the Blue Note.
