In New York starting in 1936, the Photo League had a mission to gather and support photographers who took realistic pictures that might someday bring about social change. As WNYC’s Sara Fishko tells us, the League was not just a convenient place to meet other photographers. The “Photo League” was organized around a way of looking at the world.
