Sax player Pharoah Sanders is one of the last living members of the small group of musicians who changed the sound of jazz in the 1960s. Like his bandmate John Coltrane, Sanders was drawn to what’s come to be known as “spiritual jazz.” Floating Points is a British electronic music producer – real name Sam Shepherd – whose music Pharoah Sanders heard in a rental car, and liked. The two unlikely collaborators spent five years making a single, album-length piece that also includes the London Symphony Orchestra. It’s a grand musical gesture called "Promises," a continuous 9-part piece for sax, electronics, and orchestra.
