Otto Warmbier, an American student, was detained in North Korea 17 months ago and released last week. He returned to the U.S. in a coma, and his family announced Monday that 22-year-old died at a hospital in Cincinnati.

Warmbier was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor for allegedly attempting to take a political poster. John Sifton, Asia advocacy director at Human Rights Watch, says Warmbier's story reflects the brutality of the North Korean government.
