Mozart’s Requiem was one of his last works – and the subject of a number of legends, including the one where Mozart knew he was dying and essentially wrote his own Requiem mass as depicted in the film Amadeus. However, it was Mozart’s student Franz Xaver Süssmayr who actually completed the manuscript for the Requiem. Due to nagging questions regarding passages where the harmonies and orchestration seem awkward, six musicologists have published alternative reconstructions to Süssmayr’s work and this performance will use Robert Levin’s from 1993. Conductor Bernard Labadie and the Orchestra of St. Luke's perform both Haydn’s "Nelson Mass" and Mozart's Requiem tonight at Carnegie Hall.
