The Afro-Cuban pianist Omar Sosa is a hip world traveler – from his current base in Barcelona he has made recordings with musicians from Morocco to Madagascar. And to Manhattan, because his Quarteto Americanos includes the veteran New York sax player Peter Apfelbaum in a band that takes a broad view of what America means. In one of their pieces, “Umba Kondo", North and Central America meet over a recorded rhythm splashed out on a river’s surface by the Baka people of Central Africa. Omar Sosa Quarteto Americanos plays at Birdland, April 9-13.
