NYPD idling enforcement stalls out

WNYC News | Sep 12, 2023

As the climate crisis becomes ever more immediate, New York City police are declining to enforce a 50-year-old idling ban meant to help prevent more air pollution. In 2020, then-Mayor Bill de Blasio tried to revive attention to it, launching the "Billy Never Idles" campaign, with rock star Billy Idol. But new reporting from Streetsblog NYC finds NYPD enforcement of the decades-old ban is on track to be down almost 100 percent this year.

David Meyer, deputy editor of Streetsblog, joined WNYC's Morning Edition host Michael Hill to talk about the decline, and how New Yorkers are taking matters into their own hands.
