Evicting Criminals from Public Housing

The Brian Lehrer Show | Dec 9, 2015

A new report from the Department of Investigation found issues with the way the NYPD and NYCHA are handling criminal offenders in public housing.

The investigation found that the NYPD did not fully inform NYCHA about tenants who'd engaged in criminal activity - and, in cases where NYCHA knew about criminal history, it failed to address dangers it was aware of. This relates to a procedure called "permanent exclusion," in which NYCHA can evict a tenant who's been charged with or found guilty of serious crimes, like narcotics trafficking or sexual assault.

Department of Investigation Commissioner Mark Peters explains why the recent report shows that NYCHA's permanent exclusion policy is "a toothless gesture."
