NYC Wants Schools Off The List Of Early Voting Sites in 2020, Advocates Press For Better Accessibility
Keep early voting out of schools next year. That's what the de Blasio administration is saying ahead of a joint legislative hearing Wednesday.Â
The New York City Board of Elections picked 61 early voting sites for this year's election, including 33 schools. Parents, teachers and principals pushed back citing security concerns and loss of access for nine days. Next year, with four elections, Chief Democracy Officer Rini Fonseca-Sabune says the situation will be worse. She says the BOE already proved it has alternatives.
"No schools were used for early voting in Queens. We see cultural institutions, we see community centers, we see CUNY," said Fonseca-Sabune. "Those are the institutions that should be used for early voting," she added.
The BOE must designate its early voting sites ahead of a March 2020 deadline.
