#3569: Norwegian New Music, with Tord Gustavsen Quartet
For this New Sounds, listen to new music from Norway, including a live set by the serene and transcendent Tord Gustavsen Quartet. Gustavsen, whether solo, with a trio, or in this quartet formation, delivers piano-based works of contemplation and stillness that simply captivate a listener. To be sure, the music is surely capable of transporting one to a private Nordic mind-palace.
Hear selections from Gustavsen's record "Extended Circle," performed live in the WNYC studio, featuring an interview with the pianist. The record itself is a sublime and breathtaking moment in time, including folk-and hymn-based melodies, as well as original tunes. Also as part of the show, there’s music from Susanna (Wallumrod) and the Magical Orchestra, and a work by the late Norwegian soprano Anne-Lise Bernsten in collaboration with organist and composer Nils Henrik Asheim.
