Ask Governor Murphy: NJ Transit faces a fiscal cliff, Tammy Murphy hits a speedbump
New Jersey Transit's looming fiscal cliff has been hanging over Gov. Phil Murphy's head. The agency plans to raise fares for the first time in Murphy's administration this July — a whopping 15%, with smaller hikes planned for the years ahead. But that's a patch, not a fix. Deficits before the rate hike were projected at about $1 billion with the fiscal year beginning in July 2025, and New Jersey still hasn't come up with a dedicated funding source for its major transit agency.PLUS: Murphy's wife, First Lady Tammy Murphy, has sewed up preferential treatment on many New Jersey counties' primary ballots in her race to become the state's next U.S. senator, with party bosses giving her the covered "county line" that makes candidates look more legitimate to voters. But this weekend, Monmouth County rank-and-file Democrats voted to give Rep. Andy Kim the line — a serious blow for Tammy Murphy's momentum on her own home turf.
