Newark Police Turn Over Undocumented Immigrant to ICE

WNYC News | Aug 12, 2018

An undocumented resident of Newark with no criminal record was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents by Newark police and is awaiting possible deportation to Nicaragua.

Daniel Castro was detained after he was unable to produce identification during a traffic stop in June. He was a passenger in a car that was stopped.

Reporter Thomas Franklin wrote about the incident for Tap Into Newark. He said the case is unusual.

"Newark is a sanctuary city, and they pledge in very explicit terms that Newark police will not turn people over to ICE in conditions like this," he said. "It appears that the Newark police may have made a mistake."

Franklin said Newark police are investigating the incident. If Castro's case is not reopened, he said he could be deported to his native Nicaragua, where he hasn't lived for 15 years.

Castro is being held at an ICE detention center in Elizabeth.

Franklin said Mayor Ras Baraka won't comment on the arrest while the investigation is ongoing.
