The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000

WNYC Assistant Program Manager Matt Biberfeld interviews John Camra, a Republican New York State Senator representing Nassau County, and Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Rights of Privacy. He discusses threats to privacy and bills proposed to regulate the dissemination of information about an individual.

After conducting statewide hearings on privacy, Camra's subcommittee found substantial encroachment on an individual's privacy at the government and industrial level. They are working on legislation and a "Privacy Bill of Rights" to regulate the dissemination of information in the following areas:
-Credit bureaus
-Government agencies such as the Department of Motor Vehicles
-Eavesdropping and Wiretapping equipment in the consumer market
-Telephone companies
-Computerized databases
-Employment practices
