#4197: New Sounds Live 2019: wild Up, Zola Jesus and William Brittelle from Merkin Hall

From the New Sounds Live concerts, recorded at Merkin Hall at Kaufman Music Center in early January 2019, as part of the Ecstatic Music Festival, hear music by electro-goth songwriter Zola Jesus and electro-acoustic ‘post-genre’ composer William Brittelle. They'll team up in collaboration with the experimental chamber orchestra and flexible collective wild Up, whose comfort zone is at the intersection of contemporary music, art and pop.

Listen to music by Zola Jesus, aka Nika Danilova, who crafts dark yet uplifting music dominated by her operatic vocals and keyboards. For this show, hear her works, "Run Me Out", and "Avalanche," as arranged by Australian singer, composer, and record producer, JG Thirwell (of Foetus) for strings. 

Hear wild Up perform music by the late Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, his "Odi et Amo" along with a re-imagining by William Brittelle of a Henry Purcell song, "Dido's Lament Revisited," both featuring wild Up member Jodie Landau who is a vocalist, composer, and percussionist.

Also, listen to wild Up perform Brittelle's new work, "Alive in the Electric Snow Dream", rooted in the 1980's which evokes "Trapper Keepers and unicorns vomiting rainbows" according to wild Up's Chris Rountree. The work, as Brittelle explains, was composed on location at Fort Tilden in the Rockaways.
