National Academy of Design

The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000

A WNYC announcer interviews Alfred Easton Poor, president of the National Academy of Design. They discuss the collection of the Academy, public exhibitions at the museum and the education program. The museum serves as a repository for members of the Academy, with a large collection of self-portraits as each member is required to submit one upon acceptance in the academy. Poor explains the foundation of the museum in 1825 as a method for artists to educate each other as there were few opportunities for art instruction in America at the time.
