MTA Looks to Aquire More Properties For Second Avenue Subway Phase Two
The MTA is moving forward with plans to extend the Second Avenue subway line into East Harlem with three new stops.
This week the agency will ask the board to approve a second round of land acquisition for dozens of properties in the tunnel’s path.
The nearly $7 billion project would extend the subway line from 96th Street to 125th Street on the east side.
The agency is looking to acquire everything in the 8-and-a-half mile path from low income residential buildings, to a couple of Pentecostal Churches, and even a massive Church of Scientology building in Harlem.
The agency says if it can’t reach agreements with building owners, it'll use eminent domain.
The MTA is still working with federal officials to secure half the funding for the project.
The first phase of the project included three stations and 3-and-a-half miles of new tracks, and took a decade to complete.
