Vocalist Moira Smiley has studied, and recorded, songs from the old vocal traditions of Serbia, Sweden, and Appalachia. She weaves techniques from all of those traditions – especially those associated with women’s voices – into her own songwriting, a process she has described as bumping “up against my culture's limited ideas of what a female voice should sound like, and sing about.” Here, Moira Smiley evokes the sounds of West Africa, Eastern Europe, and the American south, in a song called Bellow.
