Misdemeanors in the Classroom: Betsy DeVos & the School-to-Prison Pipeline

Midday on WNYC | May 8, 2018

Journalist Annie Waldman of ProPublica discusses her recent piece for Mother Jones, “Betsy DeVos Is Making It Easier for Schools to Send Black Kids—Like This 13-Year-Old Girl—to Jail,” in which she reports that black students are nearly four times as likely to receive an out-of-school suspension and twice as likely to be arrested as their white peers. The piece digs into the history of how this kind of structure was put in place, how the Obama administration began taking steps to undo some of the damage, and how the structure is continuing to be reinforced today.
