The 2015 murder of Black congregants by a racist gunman at the Emanuel AME Church in South Carolina made headlines. So too did the memorial service, when a president known for his eloquence realized that words were not going to suffice, and we all saw the televised footage of Barack Obama singing “Amazing Grace” instead. That spurred a folk singer named Zoe Mulford to write this song, “The President Sang Amazing Grace,” which Joan Baez then recorded. Now, this reminder of a leader’s compassion and empathy has been covered by the Kronos Quartet and the Ethiopian-American singer Meklit.
