Mayor Lindsay Press Conference with Charles Rangel

The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000

Mayor John V. Lindsay begins this press conference by congratulating the Apollo Crew on a successful launch. Next, he introduces State Assemblyman Charles Rangel who endorses Lindsay's mayoral campaign.

According to Rangel, the Democratic Party can no longer rely on the party label as defenders of human rights. The Democratic Candidate, Mario Procaccino, has neglected minority groups in New York City and therefore does not deserve Rangel's endorsement, "A united party is far less important than a united city." Lindsay responds with his thanks and recounts some of Rangel's accomplishments. This is followed by questions from the press.

Rangel further explains his reasons for endorsing Lindsay and his plans to increase voter registration in Harlem and other areas heavily populated with minority groups. Lindsay responds to questions about continuing to run against the Republican Candidate John J. Marchi, appointment commitments, and endorsements for Democratic candidates. The two men answer questions about their reelection campaigns and a suspected endorsement from the New Democratic Coalition.

In the second press conference, Mayor Lindsay reads a telegram thanking the Mayor of Jerusalem for naming a park in his honor. He declines to read another statement on the failure to approve a cross-Brooklyn expressway. Reporters follow up with questions on highway construction plans in Brooklyn as well as Robert Moses' failed Lower Manhattan Expressway. Lindsay insists that, "...cities are for people not for automobiles," and that he will work with the Brooklyn community to develop a multi-use expressway design.
