Mayor John Lindsay Press Conference - Candidacy of Charles Goodell

The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000

Mayor John Lindsay gives a press conference primarily on endorsing Senator Charles Goodell's campaign for U. S. Senate. Senator Jacob Javits warns of the danger of the Buckley campaign in dragging Republicans to the right and the issue of Richard Ottinger's campaign.

Lindsay says the only way the voters can prove Vice President Agnew is wrong is by supporting Charlie Goodell. He views Buckley's candidacy as appealing to fear and the worst instincts of people. "I'm for a war on crime that you can win, not lose." He says Buckley has no program outline, just rhetoric, and appealing to fear is bad business. He believes it makes the crime question worse and is antithetical to what the Republican party in New York is all about.

The is a brief reference to the rally at World Trade Center, a protest in favor of Buckley.

Senator Charles Goodell says William F. Buckley and the Conservative party represent a danger to the state.
