Mask Compliance Drops on Subway: MTA Survey

WNYC News | Jul 18, 2021

The mask mandate has dropped for many public places in New York, but it remains in effect on mass transit. But many subway riders don't seem to realize that.

New Yorkers did an excellent job of wearing masks, properly, this spring. More than 90 percent of subway riders did it right in April, according to an MTA survey.

Fast forward to the latest stats from earlier this month and just 71 percent of riders covered their noses and mouths on the subway.

The drop in mask compliance comes as COVID cases continue to rise in the region, with the spread of the delta variant.

Police can issue a summons for failing to wear a mask on the subway, but only 38 have been issued since September.
