Mary Halvorson: 'Amaryllis' and 'Belladonna' Featuring the Mivos Quartet at National Sawdust
May 18. 7:30PM. $30.
Guitarist and composer Mary Halvorson is an award-winning jazz musician who has developed a distinctive, often experimental style. She’s just released two complementary albums: Amaryllis, a six-song suite of works performed by a newly formed sextet of master improvisers, where the Mivos string quartet joins for three of the songs. And then there's Belladonna, a set of five compositions written for Halvorson on guitar plus the Mivos Quartet, whose parts are through-composed and augmented by Halvorson’s guitar improvisations. Mary Halvorson and her sextet consisting of Adam O'Farrill (trumpet), Jacob Garchik (trombone), Patricia Brennan (vibes), Nick Dunston (bass) and Tomas Fujiwara (drums), along with the Mivos Quartet are all playing together on May 18 at National Sawdust.Â
