Like many young jazz musicians, drummer Makaya McCraven grew up on hip hop. He used to make beats while still a student, and even though he’s now making records, he’s applying that hip hop approach to jazz ensemble playing. Most of his works grow out of improvisations that he then cuts up, loops, overdubs and processes. Then comes the tricky part – relearning the newly produced version of the music so he and his band can play it live. Makaya McCraven plays Thurs., Oct. 24, as part of the BRIC Jazz Fest Marathon, at BRIC house in Brooklyn.
