Sax player Logan Richardson is a jazz musician, but his definition of jazz is colored by Afrofuturism and by the long history of the blues. In fact, his 2018 album Blues People drew on sources going all the way back to early field hollers and shout songs of enslaved Africans in the American south. After looking to the past, Richardson looked ahead in his 2020 album called Afrofuturism. This piece, called “Trap,” borrows the electronic percussion sounds of the hip hop style that gives the track its name. Logan Richardson and his band are playing at the Village Vanguard, Tuesday-Sunday, May 10-15, two sets a night.
