Hawaiian-born, Brooklyn-based Lea Thomas is a singer, guitarist, and a weaver with a special fondness for indigo, a color that represents her Japanese heritage. Her new single, “Cry Baby,” might have an indigo hue to it as well – it starts as a small, intimate song about sorrow, driven by the nylon strings of her classical guitar; but it takes on a twilit atmosphere as synthesizers and then the distant wails of an electric guitar surround her. Lea Thomas is also an herbalist, and she’s taking part in a Folk Medicine benefit concert streaming online on Wednesday, Aug. 26. Proceeds go to direct relief groups working in the Amazon River basin.
