Kushner Accused of Fleecing Brooklyn Tenants

The family business of Jared Kushner, President Trump's son-in-law, is facing a class action lawsuit from housing advocates who say the Kushner Companies are overcharging tenants.

The lawsuit centers on a building at 89 Hicks Street. It used to be a dorm for Brooklyn Law School. But before that, it was a rent regulated apartment building.

The Housing Rights Initiative says that after Kushner Companies bought the building in 2014, the building's 48 units should, by law, have returned to the rent stabilization program. Instead, tax documents show most of the units are now market rate.

A spokesman for the Kushner Companies said in an email "we are reviewing the lawsuit."

The Housing Rights Initiative said it will continue to review the Kushner Companies' other buildings around New York City. The organization owns about 20,000 apartments around the country, many of them in New York City and northern New Jersey.

Jared Kushner continues to hold a stake in 89 Hicks Street through a trust.
