This production of Radio Moscow highlights the Kazakh musician Kurmangazy Sagyrbayuly, 1823-1896. Comparing him to Robin Hood, the host describes Kurmangazy's itinerant life as a political insurgent, musician, and shepherd.

The host provides examples of his "musical picture" compositions for the Dombyra and compositions adapted for orchestra. "Had he received a European education, he would have been a star of the first magnitude in the musical world."
