KRS-One at NJPAC Chambers Plaza
Aug. 1. 6PM. FREE

The rapper KRS-One is one of the originators of the style known as conscious rap. (His stage name stands for Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone.) Taking on social issues like inequality and police violence, KRS-One has always had a direct, plainspoken approach – and this New York native was also one of the first to use the sound of Jamaican MCs in his rapping. You can hear that in his 1993 single “Sound Of Da Police,” which remains one of his most familiar songs. KRS-One plays a free show on Aug. 1 in Newark, at NJPAC’s Chambers Plaza, as part of Horizon Sounds of the City.
