Kinshasa, the capital city of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is home to a thriving music scene that’s been compared to New York in the 1970's or Berlin in the 1990's, where artists have been creating something new and raw and street-wise while no one was watching. One of the leading bands on this still-emerging scene is Kokoko!, a group that uses lots of cheap electronic devices and a rich tradition of Congolese dance rhythms. Kokoko plays Monday night at Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn.Â
On this song, "Likolo", lead singer Makara Bianko adapts a traditional funeral chant from his Bateke ethnicity and turns it into a plea for detachment and spirituality:Â
