West African funk meets Brooklyn cool in the music of Kaleta and the Super Yamba Band. Kaleta’s real name is Leon Ligan-Majek; he was born in Benin but spent his teen years in Nigeria, where he played guitar for Afrobeat royalty like Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade. After moving to NY, Kaleta co-founded the Super Yamba Band to pay tribute to those earlier musicians, and to his older brother, who died earlier this year. Their album is called Medaho, which means ‘big brother.’ Kaleta and the Super Yamba Band play Thursday, Dec. 19, at Symphony Space.
