Judith Malina: Politics and the Theater
Lecture: Breaking and Creating Tradition: Politics and the Theatre.
From the NYPL Public Programs Brochure for Winter/Spring 1989:
In 1947 Judith Malina and Julian Beck founded The Living Theatre as a revolutionary and innovative alternative to commercial theater. She directed or performed in all productions, including The Connection, The Brig, Paradise Now, Frankenstein, Antigone, and Man Is Man. Influenced by Brecht, Piscator, and Artaud, her work reflects her strong anarcho-pacifist beliefs, which have landed her in jail in the U.S. and Brazil, where she was jailed for several months in 1971 during the creation of a cycle of street theater works. Her work has received many honors, including six Obie Awards and the Grand Prix of the Theatre des Nations. She is now working with Hanon Reznikov to establish a new New York base for the continuing work of The Living Theatre.
