John Field - Part 2 of 2

The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000

IIn this episode of Recordings, E.T.C. Edward Canby explores the work of John Field, one of the most important innovators in the piano style that is now usually associated with Chopin, who lived a generation later than Field himself. Canby highlights Field's influence on other composers, including Johannes Brahms, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, and Frederic Chopin. Canby specifically illustrates the resonance of Field's style in the work of Chopin by comparing pieces by each composer.

The Field Concerto heard here, was performed by Felicia Blumental, with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra under Froschauer. Mr. Canby compares the Field Concerto, composed before 1808, with the Chopin Concerto No 2, composed in 1829.
