The Internet Takes to the Stars With Astrology

WNYC News | Jan 11, 2018

There’s no telling what the internet will embrace next.

But in 2017, between major moments like Trump tweets and Me Too posts, social media took to the stars. Easily accessible and brand-friendly, astrology has made a recent comeback among young users on platforms like Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram in viral meme form.

The joke started as exaggerating sun signs and horoscopes. But Dorothea Lasky, who runs the popular Astro Poets (@poetastrologers) Twitter account with fellow New York poet Alex Dimitrov, says it often becomes a tool for self-discovery. She says that astrology's popularity among users can be attributed to how adaptable it is.

"The more that we mistrust the powers in charge, or just things we don't have control over, the more I think we turn to practices that we can own on our own," she said.
