Imarhan at Brooklyn Bowl
July 15. 8PM. $27.76

The musical style known as desert rock grew up in the Sahel region of West Africa, and generally refers to the music that happened when the nomadic Tuareg people began adopting the electric guitar as their own instrument back in the 70s. This so-called “desert blues,” or “Saharan rock,” usually features loping, hand-clapped rhythms, chant-like vocals, and bluesy electric guitars. The group called Imarhan is a leading Tuareg band from southern Algeria, and their music occasionally unplugs the guitars for a sound that evokes a night around a campfire, perhaps. Although they don’t stay unplugged for long. Imarhan plays July 15 at Brooklyn Bowl.
