How French Prisons Lay the Groundwork for Radicalization

The Leonard Lopate Show | Dec 28, 2015

Harper's magazine contributing editor Scott Sayare discusses his investigation into jihadism and the French legal system. For the January cover story, "Letters from a French Jihadi," (paywall) he interviewed Djamel Beghal, an imprisoned imam convicted in 2001 of plotting to bomb the U.S. embassy in Paris. Beghal sent Sayare 226 pages of letters describing his life, philosophy and the other jihadis he met in the French prison system.
