The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000

James H. McBurney leads a discussion panel considering, "How Can We Help The Emotionally Disturbed Child?" The guests are:

Dr. Fritz Raegel, Laboratory of Child Research, National Institute of Mental Health
Dr. Peter B. Neubauer, [Console?] Child Development Center, New York
Dr. Helmer R. Myklebust, Institute for Language Disorders in Children, Northwestern University

They discuss how to identify an emotionally disturbed child which may not always be the child who acts out negatively. They agree that environmental and genetic factors can lead to emotional disturbance and that parents should seek treatment immediately if they suspect their child is in need of psychiatric care. They discuss different treatment methods and the lack of adequate facilities.
