Homemakers and Adult Foster Homes

The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000

Moderator Ted O. Thackrey speaks with Miss Jane Savage, Administrator of the Division of Homemaker Service in the City Department of Welfare, and Miss Grace Kaplan, the Director of Auxiliary Services for the Department of Welfare, which handles the program for foster homes for older and handicapped persons

Miss Savage and Miss Kaplan describe the services that the Welfare Department offers to New York City Residents. The homemaker service brings trained caregivers into homes where the mother cannot, due to illness or other related reasons, properly care for their children. The service also helps the elderly who wish to remain in their homes but need assistance with certain day-to-day tasks. Homemakers have special training in home economics and how to manage a household in the case of an emergency. Miss Kaplan describes the foster home program in New York City.
