Holiday Jeer: 'We Wish You a Good Impeachment'

WNYC News | Dec 23, 2017

And now, just in time for the holidays, the Resistance Carolers are hitting a New Jersey suburb near you.

Anti-Trump activists in New Jersey are taking a holiday break from the anger and outrage that has filled their hearts and minds for the past year, and are turning to humor.

"Vladimir, Vladimir, Vladimir stop," the carolers sing to the tune of Jingle Bell Rock. "Donald J. Trump is your biggest flop. You rigged our system, and Trump's at the top, watch the weasel go pop!"

SOMA Action, which formed in South Orange and Maplewood just after the election, re-wrote the lyrics to nine Christmas songs and are performing around the two towns.  The idea came from one of the group's founders, Amy Higer, who thought it was time to have a little fun.

"This year has been very stressful and challenging but coming together and working at the grassroots level has given us some hope," Higer said.  "It’s hard to keep going. It’s hard to keep our stamina."

"I think when people see you're having fun while you're protesting, it gives the movement some ability to be sustained over time," Higer said. "And we're looking now at 2018, which is going to be the most important election,  I think, of my lifetime. So we need to have as many people involved and engaged and enthusiastic as possible."

Another group, NJ11th For Change, has Trump carols of its own. The group has a committee that knits pussy hats, and they've also developed political theater aimed at Republican Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen. This week they delivered stockings stuffed with lumps of coal.
