He was born Gary Earl Grice, but fans of the hip hop group Wu Tang Clan will know him as GZA, also known as The Genius. With his literate, sometimes even nerdy lyrics, and smooth flow, GZA has been an essential part of the Wu Tang Clan and a successful solo artist since the early 90s. Three years ago, he did something a little different; he visited the NPR Studios with Soul Rebels, a live brass band, to perform some songs from his classic 1995 album Liquid Swords. GZA leads his own band in a two night series at the Blue Note – with two shows each night on Jan. 11 and 12.
