Great Britain's Unfinished Business With Slavery

Midday on WNYC | Apr 8, 2018

Dr. Kris Manjapra, an associate professor of history at Tufts University, discusses his new piece in The Guardian's “The Long Read” titled, When will Britain face up to its crimes against humanity? The article looks at the history of slavery in the British empire and how its legacy is still felt today. Manjapra examines how the British government ultimately paid slave owners to end slavery. The amount, a shocking £15 million, was loaned to the British government and was only paid off in 2015 by British taxpayers.

This segment is guest hosted by Rebecca Carroll.
