Governor Phil Murphy is calling on Sen. Bob Menendez to resign
Governor Phil Murphy is calling on Sen. Bob Menendez to resign, but so far the indicted fellow Democrat isn’t stepping down.
“I firmly believe that when all the facts are presented, not only will I will be exonerated but I still will be New Jersey’s senior senator,” Menendez has said.
It’s not clear who might take Menendez’s spot if he does resign — that would fall to the governor to decide, and there’s talk Murphy would like to replace him with his own wife. Andy Kim, a Democratic congressman from South Jersey, has already announced a bid to unseat Menendez during the 2024 primary, and party leaders haven’t said what they plan to do if Menendez tries to stick it out.
We’ll Ask Governor Murphy that and other pressing issues, and we’ll take your calls.
Other issues we’re keeping an eye on: Murphy says he stands with the people of Israel after the attack by Hamas this week. Yet some Muslim groups say New Jersey leaders in solidarity with Israel are creating “an image of one-sidedness is both inaccurate and unethical.” A state court has issued a long-awaited ruling on school segregation that has all sides scratching their heads about what happens next. And it’s our last Ask Governor Murphy before the upcoming November legislative elections.
