The duo called Xylouris White consists of George Xylouris, who plays the laouto, the traditional lute from the Mediterranean island of Crete, and Jim White, the drummer from the Australian instrumental rock band Dirty Three. Together, they make music that is truly beyond category; it’s not Cretan folk music, not exactly rock, and despite their improvising, it's not jazz either. It’s an intriguing mixture, which may border on trance music and a distinctly personal one. Xylouris White are set to release their third album in early 2018, but they are playing tonight at The Kitchen, opening for Jonathan Richman.
