John Doe has a name that suggests near anonymity, but he was a formative presence on the L.A. punk scene in the early 80s with his band X, and since then he’s branched out into country/folk with his other band The Knitters, written a memoir, and pursued a long and acclaimed career as a solo performer. Many of his songs are portraits of outsiders, outcasts, and the overlooked. John Doe plays tonight at City Winery’s kinda new-ish venue, City Vineyard, in lower Manhattan.
