Gig Alert: John Coltrane Raga Tribute

Music Hub | Sep 23, 2015

ARTIST: Brooklyn Raga Massive
GIG: Wednesday night at Pioneer Works

In 1968, jazz sax icon John Coltrane released a 30 minute recording that contained just this one track: a howling—some say psychedelic—sonic journey called “Om.” Taken with his song “India” from earlier in the decade, it’s clear that Indian music exerted a strong influence on this practitioner of the most American of art forms. Today is John Coltrane’s birthday, and tonight at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn, an ensemble of Indian musicians celebrates and interprets the work of jazz pioneers like John and Alice Coltrane, and Pharoah Sanders.
