First Hearing On Penn Station Redevelopment Since Gov. Hochul Got On Board

WNYC News | Dec 8, 2021

Tonight, the public will get its first chance to weigh in on the state's $7 billion Penn Station redevelopment project since Gov. Kathy Hochul threw her support behind it.

This project has a lot of planning left before shovels hit the ground, but Hochul says she hopes to move it along swiftly.

She wants to brighten the entrance to Penn Station with a skylight, create eight acres of public space, and build 10, mixed-use skyscrapers.

Opponents of the project say it’ll demolish several historic buildings including a 150-year old church in the neighborhood.

They say the area doesn’t need more offices and that it’s only a facelift for the blighted station, since it won’t increase the number of tracks.

The project still needs federal approval, and infrastructure bill funding, to move forward.
