Fire at Penn Station Disrupts LIRR Service

WNYC News | Jan 13, 2015

Long Island Railroad riders are facing delays, diversions and cancellations after an early morning fire at Penn Station shut down the West End Concourse.

Some LIRR trains on the City Terminal Zone, Babylon, Hempstead and West Hempstead branches have been diverted to Atlantic Terminal or Hunterspoint Avenue. Some trains are also being canceled in Jamaica. Officials say customers should anticipate service changes and plan accordingly.

New York City Transit is cross-honoring LIRR fares for the 2, 3, 7 and E subway lines.

Trains on the A, E and C subway lines, which had been bypassing 34th Street, resumed normal service through the area at 5:38 a.m. with residual delays.

A transit spokesman said the fire did not cause any damage to the platform or track areas.

The blaze broke out at 2:22 a.m. in an underground construction site at 34th Street and Eighth Avenue. It was brought under control at 5:22 a.m. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
