Federal Bridgegate Investigators Interview Christie Whistleblower

WNYC News | Feb 5, 2015

A former Hunterdon County prosecutor who alleges the Christie Administration had him fired over a political corruption case says federal investigators questioned him for more than an hour at his home in Pennsylvania yesterday.

In 2010, Bennet Barlyn's office obtained indictments against a local Republican sheriff, who had campaigned for Gov. Chris Christie in the 2009 gubernatorial election where he defeated the incumbent Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine.

On the day the indictment was unsealed, Paula Dow, Christie's Attorney General at the time, took over the Hunterdon County Prosecutor's Office, dismissed the charges, and ultimately fired Barlyn.

Now, Barlyn has been interviewed by the same federal investigators looking into Christie's role in the Bridgegate scandal and the attendant abuse of power allegations.

"Because there was a conflict between two county law enforcement offices, the sheriff and the prosecutor...we essentially pleaded, in writing, with the Attorney General to take over the case and they declined," said Barlyn. "It was only after we obtained the indictments that the Attorney General...stepped in with both feet and dismissed the entire case."

A Christie spokesman said the Governor had nothing to do the case.
