In July, the Department of Justice filed a brief in a federal court case that backtracked on an Obama era position. Under Attorney General Jeff Sessions, the Justice Department no longer believes workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity to be covered by the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
This was unnerving news to the large numbers of queer Americans who have lost jobs or faced discrimination at work, and it inspired a new series from WNYC’s LGBTQ podcast “Nancy.” The series, called “Out at Work,” is an attempt to encourage people to share their stories about facing this type of workplace discrimination.
But what workplace protections are already in place for LGBTQ Americans? Chai Feldblum, a commissioner at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, joins The Takeaway, to explain.
This episode is hosted by Todd Zwillich.
